Wizards player whiffs on layup

Via Cosby Sweaters:

In the second quarter of the Washington Wizards’ upset of the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night, Nick Young may have attempted one of the worst layups in the NBA. Down by seven at the time, Wizards rookie Shelvin Mack started a fast break by finding Nick Young with the outlet pass. It looked like an easy two points for Nick Young but he inexplicably threw the ball over the backboard. Watch the video to see if for yourself, it is definitely a head scratcher.

Washington Wizards guard Nick Young had an embarrassing moment in the second quarter of Wednesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers when he managed to shoot a breakaway layup over the backboard.
Wizards guard Sheldon Mack stole the ball and Nick Young immediately headed to the other basket. Mack passed the ball to Young for the wide open layup, but as Young…

It hasn’t been the best of seasons for the lowly Wizards as they entered Wednesday night’s game against the Lakers, and yet they somehow overcame a 21-point deficit to drop Los Angeles 106-101.  Win or loss,  this is Washington we’re talking about, which means their best highlight of the night has to be this epic miss on a wide-open layup attempt by Nick Young.
Somehow Young…

The night didn’t start well for the Washington Wizards–particularly for guard, Nick Young.
Trailing the Los Angeles Lakers early in the 2nd quarter, Young, on a fast break and a chance to pull the Wizards closer before the half, put up probably the worst layup in NBA history.
Now, understand this; I coach a 6-year-old boys basketball team, and I can tell you that this is even…

The Wizards are without question one of the worst teams in the NBA. Through 37 games this season, they have won back-to-back games only once. In order to have an 8-29 record, tons of things have to go wrong. After suffering a 20-point loss to the Warriors on Monday night, John Wall expressed his opinion about one of the reasons for the Wizards’ failure.

During last night’s Wizards/Lakers affair, Washington Wizards forward Nick Young provided us with one of the stranger highlights of all-time.In the second quarter, Young had a break-away lay-up but somehow ended up missing and pushed the ball over the shot clock:

Half way through a tumultuous season for the Wizards, I find myself at a loss.  Covering them for these past 37 games has been great; hell, I’m watching the games anyway, why not write about what I see, right?  Still, a greater problem has emerged from this terrible 8-29 season: these guy’s are a pain to cover!

When the final buzzer sounded last night and the Wizards secured their second surprising win of the season (the first being the win against the Thunder Jan. 18th) 106-101 over the Los Angeles Lakers I was, yet again, at a loss.

If I told you that John Wall scored only 4 points on 13 percent shooting, or that the Wizards’ shooting guards (excluding Roger Mason Jr.) combined for only 13 of 38 shots, or that Kobe Bryant finished with 30 points while Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol had 19, or perhaps that the Lakers owned a 21 point lead in the third quarter…..yet the Wizards still beat the Lakers, what would…

Wizards Top Lakers 106-101: Washington Comes From…

WASHINGTON — Roger Mason led a spirited fourth-quarter comeback with nine points in the period, Kobe Bryant lost his shooting touch down the stretch, and the Washington Wizards rallied from a 21-point, third-quarter deficit Wednesday night to stun the Los Angeles Lakers 106-101.

Mason hit three 3-pointers in the fourth, turning what had been a pro-Lakers scene into an unusually raucous show of home support for a team that’s 20 games below .500. The same arena that rocked to “M-V-P!” for Bryant in the first half was bellowing “Beat L.A.!” in the final minute.

Nick Young scored 19 points for the Wizards, who beat the Lakers for the first time since 2006.

Nick Young scored 19 points for the Wizards, who beat the Lakers for the first time since 2006 – a stretch of nine straight losses. Trevor Booker had 18 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, and Kevin Seraphin scored a career-high 14 points on 7-for-8 shooting.

Mason also finished with 14 points, and John Wall had nine assists to help make up for four points on 1-for-8 shooting.

Bryant scored 30, but he went 1 for 10 from the field in the fourth quarter. Pau Gasol had 19 points and 15 rebounds, and Andrew Bynum scored 19 points for the Lakers, who dropped both ends of a road back-to-back.

Mason’s 3 at the start of the quarter gave the Wizards their first lead since the early minutes of the game, and another one pushed the lead to six with 4:51 to play. Seraphin’s dunk – Washington’s 10th of the game – and Young’s jumper put the underdogs ahead 104-99 with 43 seconds left.

After a dunk by Gasol, Booker grabbed an offensive rebound on Wall’s missed jumper to keep the Lakers at bay. The Wizards made two free throws in the final 15 seconds to help seal the win.

The Wizards were their usual disjointed selves well into the third quarter, mixing dunks with misfired alley-oops and other failed attempts at flash. Jordan Crawford and Young were both 0 for 4 from 3-point range in the first half, and Wall didn’t have a point until his dunk with 3:19 remaining in the third.

Young had a classic Wizards blooper in the second quarter, going up for an uncontested dunk only to have the ball slip out of his hands and fly over the backboard and into the rows of fans seated behind the basket.

The score was 76-55 when the Wizards started on a 26-7 run that pulled them within two at the end of the third quarter. Mason started the fourth by hitting a pair of 3s, and fellow reserve Seraphin twice gave the Washington back the lead after the Lakers had rallied.

Wearing a clear mask to protect his broken nose – he switched from a black one midgame the night before because it wasn’t comfortable – Bryant put on a show in the first half. Among the highlights during a second-quarter stretch: a spot-on alley-oop pass to Josh McRoberts, a steal of a pass from Wall that led to a 3-pointer from Derek Fisher, a drive to a crowded paint in which he used his strength to create a three-point play, and a crossover move that embarrassed Crawford and drew oohs and aahs from the fans – even though Bryant then missed the open 3-pointer.

But Bryant, who said the Lakers “played a little tired” in an overtime loss at Detroit the night before, struggled down the stretch, as did his teammates. Los Angeles shot 6 for 21 in the fourth quarter.

Notes: Bryant is 12 points shy of 29,000 for his career. … The Lakers wrap up their three-game road trip at Minnesota on Friday. … Wizards F Rashard Lewis missed his fifth straight game with a sore left knee.

Wizards make Lakers go poof

Wizards come from 21 down, top Lakers 106-101

WASHINGTON (AP)—The same arena that rocked to “M-V-P!” for Kobe Bryant
in the first half was bellowing “Beat L.A.!” in the final minute.

It’s amazing the fans weren’t speechless over what they were witnessing. It
wasn’t merely that the Los Angeles Lakers had blown a 21-point, second-half lead
to the lowly Washington Wizards—it was the fact that the Lakers had
essentially lost the game to a bunch of Wizards second-stringers.

It truly is almost surreal what happened in the fourth quarter of the
Wizards’ 106-101 victory Wednesday. Kevin Seraphin scored 10 of his career-high
14 points. Roger Mason hit three huge 3-pointers. Nick Young, who usually passes
the ball only with great reluctance, had four of his career-high six assists.
Trevor Booker, the only starter to see significant minutes, grabbed eight of his
career-high 17 rebounds.

Also, Bryant, who seemingly could do whatever he wanted in the first half,
went 1 for 10 in the final period to finish with an unfulfilling 30 points.

Conclusion: It’s safe to say that the Lakers thought they had it won when
they were leading 76-55 in the third quarter.

“I was out there kind of loafing around and having a good time,” said
Andrew Bynum, who scored 19 points but committed seven turnovers. “They played
up, got the home crowd into it, and they were able to hit shots.”

The Wizards will take it. They hadn’t beaten the Lakers since 2006, a streak
of nine straight losses. The same team that was called “unprofessional” by
coach Randy Wittman after a 20-point loss to Golden State on Monday somehow
pulled off a minor miracle.

“When our backs are against the wall,” Young said, “you can’t do nothing
but go up.”

Young finished with 19 points, and those half-dozen assists were indeed out
of the norm for someone with only 38 in his first 36 games, causing him to joke
that he had become “a complete player.” Booker scored 18 points, and Seraphin
shot 7 for 8 and tied his career high with nine rebounds. Mason finished with 14
points, and John Wall had nine assists to help make up for four points on
1-for-8 shooting. The bench tallied 55 points.

“A lot of us,” Mason said, “are hungry to play.”

Pau Gasol added 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Lakers, who dropped both
ends of a road back-to-back. Bryant said the team “played a little tired”
after an overtime loss at Detroit the night before, and on Wednesday he wasn’t
saying much of anything.

How surprised were you that you were up 21 and you lost? “Shocked.”

How disappointed? “Very.”

“I’ll keep it to one word,” Bryant then said.

The Wizards were their usual disjointed selves well into the third quarter,
mixing dunks with misfired alley-oops and other failed attempts at flash. Jordan
Crawford
and Young were both 0 for 4 from 3-point range in the first half, and
Wall didn’t have a point until his dunk with 3:19 remaining in the third.

Young had a classic Wizards blooper in the second quarter, going up for an
uncontested dunk only to have the ball slip out of his hands and fly over the
backboard and into the rows of fans seated behind the basket.

The deficit was 21 when the Wizards started on a 26-7 run that pulled them
within two at the end of the third quarter. Mason started the fourth by hitting
a pair of 3s, and Seraphin twice gave Washington back the lead after the Lakers
had rallied.

Seraphin’s dunk—Washington’s 10th of the game—and Young’s jumper put the
underdogs ahead 104-99 with 43 seconds left. After a dunk by Gasol, Booker
grabbed an offensive rebound on Wall’s missed jumper to keep the Lakers at bay.
The Wizards made two free throws in the final 15 seconds to help seal the
improbable win.

“Our mindset right now to play on the road,” Lakers coach Mike Brown said,
“is not what it should be.”

Notes: Bryant wore a clear mask to protect his broken nose. He had switched
from a black one midgame the night before because it wasn’t comfortable. …
Bryant is 12 points shy of 29,000 for his career. … The Lakers wrap up their

his fifth straight game with a sore left knee.

Los Angeles Lakers Vs. Washington Wizards: Fan…

The Los Angeles Lakers played a tough game against the Detroit Pistons on March 6 and now will have to face the Washington Wizards on March 7 – on the back-end of a back-to-back. Kobe Bryant and the Lakers fell just short in Detroit, losing to the Pistons in overtime 88-85. Bryant came out wearing a new black mask and shot 2-for-10 in the first half – he switched back to the clear mask at halftime and likely won’t wear the black mask against the Wizards. He complained it was slipping all over the place and looked to be more rigid and uncomfortable than the clear one he had been wearing.

Regardless, the Lakers have to put their loss to the Pistons behind them and get back to playing their brand of basketball. Let’s look at what the Lakers will need to do to earn their 10th straight win over the Wizards:

Bench Scoring

The Lakers bench scored a whopping total of seven points against the Pistons. In fact, anyone not named Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, or Andrew Bynum combined for just 13 points in the contest. That is not going to win any team basketball games, especially when they already struggle on the road. The Lakers’ bench and supporting cast are going to have to step up in this game against the Wizards.

Kobe Bryant

Bryant will always be the offensive leader of this team, but this isn’t 2006 anymore. He has two very talented seven-footers in Gasol and Bynum to get the ball to when he isn’t shooting the ball well. 8-of-26 shooting isn’t exactly what I would call a good shooting performance by any stretch. The Lakers didn’t lose that game because of Bryant’s shooting performance, but they didn’t win either. He did, however, score the game-tying basket to send the game to overtime.

Road Play

The Lakers need to do something about their play on the road. While they are currently in fourth place in the Western Conference, their road record is 6-13. Imagine if the Lakers’ road record was 13-6, they would be tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder for first place in the Western Conference. If the Lakers want to compete in the NBA Playoffs, they are going to need to start winning on the road.

This will be the game where the Lakers get comfortable and breakout on the road, beating the Wizards for the 10th straight time.

Prediction: Lakers 110 – Wizards 90

WASHINGTON — The Golden State Warriors found the perfect remedy for a team struggling through a long road trip: the Washington Wizards.

The Wizards, on the other hand, seem to have no answers after a performance their coach termed “unprofessional.”

Golden State found the 3-point shooting touch that had been missing for the previous five games of the road swing and routed the Wizards from the opening quarter in a 120-100 win Monday night.

The Warriors were 15 for 23 on 3-pointers, a season-best 65.2 percent.

“It was like the basket was big for everybody. Everybody was making shots,” Monta Ellis said.

Ellis led the Warriors with 25 points and was 10 for 16 from the floor, including 2 for 4 on 3-pointers. He didn’t play at all in the fourth quarter as both teams emptied their benches.

The Warriors host the Grizzlies on Wednesday night.

The long-range barrage was a sharp turnaround from the previous five games, when the Warriors shot 24.2 percent from 3-point range.

“I wish they would have came a little bit earlier, but we’re going to take this one, go home and see what happens,” Ellis said.

Klay Thompson scored 18, and David Lee had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Golden State, which had six players in double figures. It was Golden State’s highest-scoring game since beating Toronto 138-100 on March 25, 2011.

Nick Young scored 25 points, 15 in the fourth quarter, and John Wall had 20 points and 14 assists for Washington, which lost for the seventh time in eight games.

“We get one win and come into a situation where we have a team at the end of a road trip, in a back-to-back and we come in with that effort to start the game,” Washington coach Randy Wittman said. “Inexcusable, and that’s on me. … That is unprofessional. I apologize to everybody that had to watch it and had to come here tonight.”

Thunder 95, Mavericks 91

OKLAHOMA CITY — Russell Westbrook scored 24 points, Kevin Durant had 22 and Oklahoma City scored the final eight points to beat Dallas and run its home winning streak to 13 games. Westbrook answered Dirk Nowitzki’s fourth 3-pointer of the final period by hitting one of his own from the right wing to get Oklahoma City within 91-90 with 2:25 remaining, and Dallas didn’t score again. Serge Ibaka hit two free throws with 46 seconds left to give Oklahoma City the lead, and Jason Terry missed two shots down the stretch for the Mavericks. Nowitzki finished with 27 points but didn’t touch the ball on a key possession when Dallas was down by two with 13 seconds left.

Bulls 92, Pacers 72

CHICAGO — Luol Deng scored 20 points, teaming with Derrick Rose in a decisive third-quarter rally against Indiana that sent Chicago to its seventh straight victory. Rose had 13 points and nine assists, hitting three 3-pointers while Deng had two in the third as the Bulls blew open a close game. Joakim Noah had 17 rebounds to lead the Bulls to a dominating 60-32 edge on the boards. Chicago outscored the Pacers 20-4 on second-chance points. Paul George scored 21 points for Indiana, which had a six-game winning streak snapped.

Timberwolves 95, Clippers 94

MINNEAPOLIS — Kevin Love had 39 points and 17 rebounds to carry Minnesota past Los Angeles. Darko Milicic had 13 points in a spot start for the injured Nikola Pekovic and Michael Beasley scored all nine of his points in the fourth quarter for the Wolves. Blake Griffin had 26 points and 12 rebounds, but scored just four in the final period for the Clippers.

Magic 92, Raptors 88

TORONTO — Dwight Howard had 36 points and 13 rebounds, Ryan Anderson added 19 points and 13 boards, and Orlando beat Toronto. DeMar DeRozan scored 23 for the Raptors, who have not won back-to-back games since road wins over Phoenix and Utah on Jan. 24 and 25. Toronto has gone 6-13 since.

Bucks 97, 76ers 93

MILWAUKEE — Beno Udrih hit a go-ahead jumper with just under a minute left, and Milwaukee held off a late Philadelphia comeback. Brandon Jennings had 33 points and Drew Gooden added 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks, who have been stuck in a funk for a little more than a month. Since beating the Miami Heat on Feb. 1, Milwaukee had lost 12 of its last 16 games coming into Monday night’s game. Lou Williams had 26 points for the 76ers, who have lost eight of 10.

Jazz 109, Cavaliers 100

CLEVELAND — Al Jefferson scored 25 points, Gordon Hayward had 23, and Utah handed Cleveland its sixth straight loss. Utah snapped a six-game road losing streak with only its fourth victory away from home in 17 games. Rookie Kyrie Irving led Cleveland with 22 points — 21 in the second half. He scored 13 points in the third quarter.

Nuggets rally for 119-116 OT win over Kings

DENVER (AP) — Arron Afflalo hit three free throws with 0.6 seconds left in regulation, Ty Lawson made a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining in overtime, and the Denver Nuggets rallied for a 119-116 victory over the struggling Sacramento Kings on Monday night.

Afflalo finished with a career-high 32 points for the Nuggets, who improved to 4-0 since the All-Star break.

Lawson came up with the clutch basket for the second straight night, finishing with 16 points and 13 assists.

Marcus Thornton and Tyreke Evans each had 27 points for the Kings, who dropped their fourth straight on the day they announced they had extended the contract of coach Keith Smart through the 2012-13 season.

Thornton also had the foul on Afflalo in the closing seconds that allowed the Nuggets to get the game into overtime and pull out an improbable win.

The Kings trailed by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter, only to storm back and take a 96-93 lead on a 3-pointer by Francisco Garcia with 4:23 remaining.

From there, it was an exchange of 3-pointers between the teams, as Lawson hit one to tie it up, only to have Thornton answer right back. Evans gave the Kings some breathing room with a short jumper, extending the lead to 103-98 with 1:16 remaining.

The cushion didn’t last.

Afflalo hit a 3-pointer with 9.7 seconds remaining to make it a one-point game.

After Isaiah Thomas hit two free throws to extend the lead to 108-105, the Nuggets held the ball for one final shot.

Just before the buzzer sounded, Afflalo launched a deep 3-point attempt, with Thornton grazing his arm. Afflalo drained the first two free throws and then had to patiently wait after the Kings called timeout.

He returned to the line, where he made the final one to tie the score at 108.

Jimmer Fredette’s desperation heave was offline and the game went to overtime.

In overtime, the Kings jumped out to an early lead, but the Nuggets quickly responded.

Lawson hit a 3-pointer from the top of the circle to give the Nuggets the lead. Garcia’s final shot fell short.

Once a banged-up bunch, the Nuggets are steadily returning to health. Leading scorer Danilo Gallinari was back after missing 13 games with a left ankle sprain. So was Brazilian center Nene, who sat out 10 games with a calf strain.

Not surprisingly, Gallinari and Nene both showed some early rust from their long layoffs.

Gallinari didn’t hit his first basket until swishing a 3-pointer with 4:04 remaining in the third quarter. He had just four points on the evening.

Nene finished with six points in just over 15 minutes.

When Gallinari hobbled off the court on Feb. 6, it appeared as if he might be sidelined for quite some time after tests revealed a chip fracture in his left foot. But further examinations later showed the fracture wasn’t caused by his stumble and may have actually occurred before he joined the NBA in 2008.

The versatile Italian forward proved to be a fast healer, returning nearly to the day the team had predicted.

The Nuggets were 6-7 without Gallinari, one of the players they’re counting on to deliver big shots at crunch time.

But with the game on the line the healing Gallinari was on the bench, not the floor.

Even with the return of Gallinari and Nene, the Nuggets are far from full strength. They were missing swingman Rudy Fernandez (back) and center Kosta Koufos (left knee).

However, Timofey Mozgov played Monday despite an ailing left ankle. He had eight early points before appearing to hurt his ankle again. Mozgov didn’t play in the second half.

The Nuggets trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, only to go on an 8-0 run to close out the half and tie the game at 53.

Notes: Kings F J.J. Hickson missed the three-game road swing with a hip pointer. … The Kings will begin a franchise-record nine-game homestand on Wednesday against New Orleans. … Lawson was named the Western Conference player of the week Monday. … The Nuggets are 13-3 against the Kings at home since 2003-04. .

Batum has 19 in Blazers’ 86-74 win over Hornets

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Nicolas Batum scored 19 points and the Portland Trail Blazers snapped a three-game losing streak with an 86-74 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Monday night.

LaMarcus Aldridge, who had just two points and three rebounds in the first half, finished with 10 points and 11 boards for Portland, which led by as many as 26 points and got a morale-boosting victory before heading out on a seven-game, 12-night road trip. Aldridge did not play in the fourth quarter.

Marco Belinelli had 18 points for New Orleans, which has lost four of its last five games. At 9-29, the injury-depleted Hornets have the worst record in the Western Conference. Chris Kaman had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Warriors finish up road trip in Washington

Warriors-Wizards Preview

Warriors-Wizards Preview

The Washington Wizards finally took advantage of some strong performances
from two of their young players last time out. In their next game, the Wizards
might benefit from the absence of one of Golden State’s young stars.

A foot injury has Stephen Curry’s status unknown for the struggling
Warriors’ visit to the Verizon Center on Monday night.

John Wall has averaged 22.3 points over Washington’s last eight games, and
Jordan Crawford has contributed 21.8 per game over that same span while moving
into the starting lineup.

The Wizards, though, earned their only victory in the first game of that
stretch before edging Cleveland 101-98 on Saturday. Crawford led the way with 31
points, one shy of matching his career high set against Sacramento on Feb. 22,
and Wall chipped in 24 points.

“We were on a six-game losing streak and we needed to end it. Tonight
happened to be the night. We did the things we needed to do, we got stops and
got rebounds,” said Crawford, who made a career-high 13 field goals and matched
another mark with five 3-pointers.

Crawford and the Wizards (8-28) will next face a Golden State team that’s
lost its scoring touch as Curry has dealt with a strained tendon in his right
foot.

The point guard has played only three seconds during a 1-3 stretch, and his
team has averaged 80.3 points on 37.9 percent shooting in those four games.
That’s far below its 99.2 point average and 45.9 percent shooting over the first
30 contests this season.

The Warriors (14-20) were 29 of 80 from the field (36.3 percent) and 4 of 19
from 3-point range in their worst scoring performance of the season Sunday, an
83-75 loss in Toronto. David Lee (22 points, 12 rebounds) was one of only two
players in double figures for Golden State, which scored 11 points in the third
quarter and 28 in the second half during the fifth of a season-high six
consecutive road games.

“It hurts really bad,” rookie swingman Klay Thompson said. “This was a very
winnable game, a team that we thought we were better than.”

The Warriors have been better than the Wizards lately, having won the past
two matchups and six of the last nine. While they’ve averaged 113.3 points over
those nine meetings, their defense hasn’t provided much help by giving up 113.1
per game.

Golden State has allowed at least 98 points in each of the last 12 matchups
and an average of 114.2.

Washington, though, enters this first meeting of the season scoring 92.9
points per game – 4.4 fewer than last season.

The Wizards are seeking their fifth win in seven home meetings but might
need to do a better job containing Monta Ellis. Golden State’s leading scorer
averaged 29.0 points on 52.3 percent shooting against Washington last season and
27.5 over his last four matchups.

The Wizards, meanwhile, could benefit from Andray Blatche’s return from a
strained left calf. He’s averaged 19.2 points against Golden State since the
beginning of the 2008-09 season for his best mark against any opponent over that
span.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Wall, Crawford lifts Wizards over Cavaliers

CBSSports.com wire reports

WASHINGTON — Jordan Crawford had a burst of offense midway through the fourth quarter that spurred the Washington Wizards to a 10-point lead.

Then he could only try to keep Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving from erasing it.

Irving led a Cleveland rally in the final minutes but came up just short as Washington held on for a 101-98 win Saturday night.

Crawford finished with 31 points, including 10 during a 14-5 run in the fourth quarter that gave the Wizards a 96-86 lead with 3:45 left.

Irving scored 20, including eight of the Cavaliers’ nine points in the final 2½ minutes.

The final stretch was nerve-racking for Crawford, right up until Anthony Parker’s 3-point attempt missed at the buzzer and the Wizards’ six-game losing streak ended.

“You want to win it so bad,” Crawford said. “The time’s going slow, they’re making runs, making big plays. I just wanted to get it over with.”

Antawn Jamison scored 29 in his return to Washington but missed a 3-point attempt to tie the game with 35 seconds to play. It was Jamison’s first appearance in the Verizon Center since being traded from the Wizards to Cleveland in February 2010.

“He had a hot hand tonight,” Washington forward Trevor Booker said. “I think he wanted to come back and show the crowd that he still had it. He might’ve been mad that they traded him away or something.”

Jamison said his return didn’t carry any added emotions. He was more concerned with Cleveland’s five-game losing streak.

“I don’t see a sense of urgency,” Jamison said. “I don’t know if its getting tired or whatever, but we really have to play with a sense of urgency to get a win. Can’t let this drag out even more.”

The game featured the first matchup between the point guards who went No. 1 overall in the last two drafts — the rookie Irving and Washington’s John Wall, who had 24 points and five assists.

Both point guards had highlight moments. Wall ended the third quarter by going the length of the court in 3.9 seconds for a buzzer-beating layup to tie the game at 78.

“I was just showing my track speed,” Wall said.

In the fourth quarter, the battle turned to Crawford and Irving.

The Wizards held an 82-81 lead with about seven minutes to play before they went on their run — including two 3-pointers from Crawford — and took the 10-point lead.

Irving, who was back in the starting lineup a day after resting with an illness, then took control, and his layup with about a minute left cut Washington’s lead to 100-97. Jamison had a chance to tie it on Cleveland’s next possession, but his 3-pointer was off target.

Cleveland was still down three when Irving went to the line with 7 seconds left. Irving made the first free throw, but missed the second and McGee came down with the rebound.

After Wall made one of two free throws, Parker missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

“We definitely need to get back on the right track,” Irving said. “It’s definitely frustrating going game to game. Going down to the wire and you can’t close it out. We just have to figure it out and try to get a win.”

Jamison scored 15 points in the first quarter and Cleveland led 33-24 after one. The 33 points were the most Cleveland has scored in any opening quarter this season.

The Cavaliers led by as many as 10 in the second quarter, but Washington came back with a 15-4 run to erase the deficit midway through the quarter, and the teams stayed close the rest of the way.

“This was a game we made harder than we should’ve, but that’s the learning process,” Washington coach Randy Wittman said.

Notes

  • Washington F Andray Blatche played for the first time since straining his left calf Jan. 28. He had one point, nine rebounds and five assists in 22 minutes.
  • G Nick Young was out with a bruised right knee.
  • Crawford tied his career high with five 3-pointers.
  • Cleveland C Hollins made his first start of the season, and F Alonzo Gee got his fourth start.

Washington Wizards Lose, John Wall Grows Up, and…

Washington Wizards Lose, John Wall Grows Up, and…

I saw first-hand just how much the Washington Wizards were energized in front of 18,688 at the Verizon Center on Wednesday night in their first game back following NBA All-Star Weekend, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the three point shooting of the Orlando Magic as they fell at home, 102-95.

Dwight Howard
Michael C. Jones

The game initially looked like it would be another case of the Wizards failing yet again to compete with another top-tier team, but John Wall’s 33 points, which included 14 in the fourth quarter, kept the game within reach until its final minutes.

Wall couldn’t do it alone, however, and head coach Randy Wittman decided to start Kevin Seraphin and Jordan Crawford in place of JaVale McGee and Nick Young to shake things up. “I gotta get them playing back the way that they can,” he said.

The change in the lineup seemed to inspire McGee, who was efficient with nine points and six rebounds in just under 16 minutes of playing time. Amidst speculation that his tenure with the team may be coming to an end, the benching could be the motivation he needs to step his game up.Young finished the game with just five points and sustained a knee injury in limited action.

Orlando Magic stay focused on the present

Though Wall gave them fits, the Orlando did what they do best and shot the ball well from the arc, going 15 of 36. Washington managed to tie the game late on a Maurice Evans three-pointer with 6:57 to go, but Jameer Nelson answered right back with a three of his own at the 6:02 mark and put the Magic up for good.

Though most of the talk has been about Dwight Howard and where he might be playing in the coming weeks, Ryan Anderson, who led all scorers with 23 points didn’t see the speculation as a distraction. “We’re not really focused on some of the stuff that we can’t control,” he said. “We’re (more) focused on what’s going on right now and this team, because we’re playing well,”

Can John Wall take the next step in the second half of the season?

Finding an increased comfort level for Wall continues to be the focus for Wittman and the coaching staff. Over the course of the game, he played without the ball in his hands more than usual – even Dwight Howard noticed:

“One thing he did tonight which I haven’t seen him do a lot was come off the screens, shooting jump shots. Once he hits that shot consistently, that’s going to be tough for guys to guard him, especially big guys.”

The Magic got a first-hand look at just how special of a player Wall could become should he continue to improve. He was confident taking and making tough shots and had no problem being the go-to guy down the stretch.

I’m certain the Wizards can live with their franchise player taking the reigns late in games.

Kings break 6-game losing streak, top Wizards,…

WASHINGTON (AP) — Marcus Thornton scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half, rookie Isaiah Thomas had 16 of his 18 after halftime, and the Sacramento Kings beat the Washington Wizards 115-107 Wednesday night in a nonstop points-fest that looked like an All-Star game preview — minus the All-Stars.

Tyreke Evans added 22 points — 20 in the first half — and DeMarcus Cousins had 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Kings, who broke a six-game losing streak and salvaged a win on the final game of their six-game road trip.

Thomas, making his fourth consecutive start, made 8 of his last 12 shots and has scored 78 points as a starter, tying Otis Birdsong (1977) for the most points scored by a Kings rookie in his first four starts.

Jordan Crawford scored a season-high 32 points, and John Wall had 21 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds for the Wizards, who have lost four straight.

The Kings led 104-103 with 3:44 to play, but Thomas scored the next basket to start a game-ending 11-4 run as Sacramento matched its highest point total of the season.

Neither of these losing teams will have a player in the All-Star game in Orlando on Sunday — the only representatives will be former Kentucky teammates Cousins and Wall in the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday — but that didn’t keep both sides from getting in the spirit of fast-paced runs with defense optional.

Players have been known to check out mentally in the final game before the All-Star vacation, and coaches Keith Smart and Randy Wittman said they addressed that very fact with their players before the game.

Sacramento’s Smart said: “I’ve been around it when I look in the tunnel and the limos are already there — ready to go to the next spot.”

Certainly, the game was played as if the limousines were not only waiting — but quickly running out of gas. There were few whistles as the teams went back and forth in summer-league style. The Wizards had 68 points at halftime, the most they’ve scored in any half this season.

Of course, the Kings usually play like this anyway — they allowed 110 points per game in the first five games of the road trip. There were 58 fast break points, 102 points in the paint, multiple alley-oops, a JaVale McGee goaltend that landed in the eighth row and runs of 11-0, 12-2 and 10-2 — not quite enough for either team to open a big lead.

Crawford hit a 3-pointer, then backed down Jimmer Fredette for a three-point play in the half. Thomas and Wall got double technicals for jawing at each other. Thornton and Thomas got hot in the second half, with Thomas’ bank shot giving the Kings at 102-101 lead with 5 minutes to play.

Notes: In this lockout-shortened season, both the Kings (11-22) and Wizards (7-26) hit the break exactly halfway through their 66-game respective schedules. Sacramento improved to 4-17 on the road; Washington fell to 4-13 at home. … The Wizards had won six in a row at home against the Kings. … Washington F Jan Vesely was not on the bench at the start of the game because of a stomach virus, but he played in the second half. … Sacramento F-G John Salmons missed his second straight game with a sore right hip.

Washington Wizards building better chemistry but…

The results were evident through the first two victories and even during some competitive stretches against the Clippers and the Suns. But the final dud of a second half in Phoenix proved that off-the-court chemistry doesn’t always translate to on-the-court success. The Suns buried the Wizards during a 31-6 run to close the third period, in an eight-minute stretch that Coach Randy Wittman described as “the most selfish spree of basketball since I’ve taken over.”

The Wizards had established a reputation as a one-on-one offensive team this season under former coach Flip Saunders, but Wittman had worked hard to make sure that his players trusted each other and relied on ball movement to get better, more efficient shots. The collapse during the 104-88 loss to Phoenix was more disturbing, because the Wizards had started the third period getting seven points by sharing the ball.

John Wall fed Nick Young for a jumper, then drove inside, drew Steve Nash and Jared Dudley, and fed Trevor Booker for vicious dunk in the lane. Booker then converted a three-point play that gave the Wizards a 55-54 lead with 8 minutes 13 seconds remaining in the period.

What followed was an incredible meltdown on both ends of the floor, a rapid descent that turned a close game into a laugher in a matter of minutes.

Wittman didn’t have to think too hard about what happened. “Selfish is what happened,” Wittman said. “We became selfish. We didn’t share the ball and tried to do everything one on one, and a good team like Phoenix is going to take that away from you. That’s all it was.”

The Wizards have had their share of second-half breakdowns, which is one of the reasons they have recorded 17 double-digit losses — second only to Charlotte — through the first half of this season. They will host Sacramento on Wednesday in the final game before the all-star break, which will probably feel like another road game considering how much the team has moved around.

Unlike last season, the Wizards are only slightly better at Verizon Center than they are away from home. They would like to head into the break on a positive note after failing to compete in Utah, where they trailed by 28 in the third quarter, and only showing up for 28 minutes in Phoenix, where they trailed by 26 in the fourth quarter. The Wizards lost each of the past three games by at least 14 points.

“It’s very disappointing,” Young said. “We’ve seen how good we can be. We could’ve made it a more positive road trip at 3-2 but to get blown out like that, it’s tough. But we’ve got to bounce back, look forward to Wednesday.”

The Wizards should also try to avoid having the kind of lengthy letdowns that have derailed them in recent losses to Houston and Miami, as they simply gave up or failed to play as a team.

As Nash and the Suns pounded them with crisp ball movement in the second half, the Wizards tried to respond with quick jumpers. Lewis was sitting next to Maurice Evans as the Suns scored 16 consecutive points, with Nash ending the run with a difficult, hanging jumper over Wall to put his team ahead, 70-55.

Evans mentioned that the game was getting out of control and Lewis looked up, stunned at how the team could go from leading to trailing by so much so quickly.

“It flashed before my eyes. It happened so fast. I couldn’t believe it,” Lewis said. “It’s disappointing, because we wanted to win this one. We felt it would’ve been a successful trip even though we didn’t play well in Utah. I still think we did a lot of positive things.”

After the loss to Phoenix, Jordan Crawford didn’t dispute Wittman’s notion that the team played selfishly.

“Yeah, probably. When you get down, everybody try to be the hero. I think that cost us,” said Crawford, who attempted a pull-up three-pointer on a three-on-two fast break during the run. He added that the Wizards did make some positive strides on the trip. “We’ve shown that even on the road, we can beat good teams. Good teams do it every night. I think we went out and played hard. We just had some mental lapses.”

Not much else going on in the NBA world today.

Gortat, Nash, Frye lead Suns over Wizards 104-88

PHOENIX (AP)—For an instant early in the second half, the Washington
Wizards appeared to have a legitimate shot at their first victory over Phoenix
in six years. Then they were overwhelmed during one of the Suns’ most dominant
stretches of basketball this season.

Marcin Gortat scored 20 points, Steve Nash had 12 points, 11 assists and
seven rebounds in three quarters, and the Suns beat Washington 104-88 on Monday
night for their 10th straight win over the Wizards.

Phoenix, coming off a 102-90 home victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, won
on consecutive nights for the first time this season.

“It was important to be strong and be tough mentally because we expended a
lot of energy last night,” Nash said. “We haven’t had a couple of days off in
it feels like forever.”

The Suns outscored Washington 31-6 after the Wizards took their only lead of
the game early in the third quarter.

“Selfish, that’s what it was,” Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. “We were
up by one and then went on a spree of the most selfish basketball I have seen
since I have taken over. I have to find the right people to play the right way
because I am not letting that slip back in.”

Phoenix led by 24 entering the fourth.

“That felt very good,” Channing Frye said his team’s big run. “I think
it’s letting everybody get into a rhythm. Defensively you saw we started to pick
it up, just give them one shot. We were moving, we were talking on `D’ and just
playing good basketball.”

Frye added 19 points and 11 rebounds and Michael Redd scored 14 for the
Suns, who topped 100 points against Washington for the 18th time in a row, the
longest active streak of its kind in the NBA.

Jordan Crawford scored 20 points for the Wizards, who finished a five-game
trip with three losses after winning the first two.

Trevor Booker added 16 for Washington. Nick Young, the Wizards’ leading
scorer at 17.5 points per game, shot just 3 of 13 for six points, the latest of
several big scorers to have a rough night while being defended by Grant Hill.

The Wizards outscored the Suns 7-1 to start the second half and took a 55-54
lead on Booker’s three-point play.

Phoenix scored on its next eight possessions, a 16-0 outburst that put the
Suns up 70-55 on Nash’s 8-footer with 3:53 left in the third quarter. Phoenix
kept going from there, finishing the quarter with a 12-3 run to lead 85-60
entering the fourth. Redd had eight points in the surge, including a pair of
3-pointers. The second one came with 34.8 seconds left in the period.

“We just played well, really,” Suns coach Alvin Gentry said. “I wish I
had a deep thought about it, but we played well. We were good defensively and we
got out and ran and got easy shots. That’s really all it was.”

Overall, Phoenix outscored Washington 32-13 in the third.

“We stopped playing as a team,” said Wizards guard John Wall, who finished
with 10 points. “We stopped moving the ball.”

The Suns never trailed in the first half but never got the lead to double
digits, either.

They jumped out to a 19-10 lead but, when Phoenix had five reserves on the
court, Washington rallied to tie it at 36 on Rashard Lewis’ 9-foot runner with
6:17 left in the half.

The Phoenix starters returned and a 6-0 Suns spurt made it 42-36 when Hill
scored on a fast-break layup. Gortat’s dunk on a pass from Nash, followed by one
of two free throws from Frye, boosted the lead to 45-38 with 3:51 to go in the
half. The Wizards cut it to 51-48 when Young made his first shot of the night on
his sixth attempt, a 12-footer with 37.8 seconds left.

Hill’s two free throws made it 53-48 and Wall was called for an offensive
foul, against Markieff Morris, on Washington’s final possession before the
break.

Frye had 10 points and six rebounds in the first quarter. Gortat scored 13
in the first half and Nash had eight assists. Wall and JaVale McGee had 10
points apiece in the first two quarters for Washington.

Notes: This was the only meeting between the teams this season. … The
Wizards haven’t had a winning road trip of five games or more since 2005. …
Washington’s last victory over the Suns was on Dec. 22, 2006, when Gilbert
Arenas
scored 54 points in an overtime victory at Phoenix. … The Suns won
consecutive home games for only the second time this season. … Phoenix led by
as many as 27 against the Lakers on Sunday night and 26 against Washington.

What do you guys think about this.

Jan 4, 2012 – The Orlando Magic (4-2) host the Washington Wizards (0-5) on Wednesday night, playing against Rashard Lewis for the first time since they traded the veteran forward to the Wizards in December 2010. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Eastern on Sun Sports.

Orlando’s four-game winning streak ended Monday against the Detroit Pistons. Fatigue plagued the Magic, who where playing on the back end of a back-to-back set, as they shot just 33.3 percent in the second half and allowed Detroit to take command. Pistons guard Ben Gordon scored 26 to lead all players, while center Dwight Howard put up 19 points, seven rebounds, and five steals in defeat.

The Wizards are the league’s only winless team, though they at least made progress in Monday’s 100-92 loss to the Boston Celtics. In that contest, the Wizards crossed the 90-point threshold for the first time in the 2011/12 season. Former No. 1 overall pick John Wall leads Washington with 13.8 points, 6.8 assists, and two steals per game, but has shot just 31.7 percent from the field. JaVale McGee also averages 13.8 points per game and adds 11 rebounds and 2.4 blocks.

Orlando swept the season series from Washington, 4-0, in the 2010/11 season, winning by an average of 18.3 points per game.
